Do you story tell? It really is something you should think about. Is your story from the heart and interesting, will it strike a cord in other peoples heart or lives?
But what will your story be about?
I have an interest in photography, have had ever since I went to art college. I had one of those tutors that was kind of a hippy I guess you would call him, very into the beautiful young students but happy to help everyone and share his knowledge.
I learnt my photography on a Pentax K1000 and Ilford film and darkroom techniques from wonderful technicians. My first camera was a Zenith TTL which was so heavy and robust you could drop it from a height and it would still work.
However I was never ‘good enough’ at the technical side so I kept my photography as a hobby which eventually died a death. It wasn’t until I borrowed a Canon D60 from a friend that I finally ‘got back into’ my hobby some 20 odd years later. And now here I am wondering what the hook is going to be for my new photography blog.
When you begin blogging it is always best to have something to ‘say’ and its in your best interest if you know what your talking about so you can blog it without the fear of someone cutting in and saying what a pratt you are for posting it. Be positive about your posts and in the knowledge that people WILL read them, even if its just a skim through, if its interesting to you and has something that speaks to them as a person they will keep skimming your posts with the end result them becoming an avid follower. Start telling people about the products that you use, what its like, how it works and by joining their products affiliate programs you could earn money from click through and any subsequent sales. Share their product offers and write reviews, if you find it interesting others will too.
I’m sitting here perspiring, sod it no, i’m sweating over this post as this mornings first hot flush sweeps me from head to toe. Hold on it wont last long, just going to open a window…….. My office is only small and my computer acts as a constant heat source so i’m battling that too. I’m thinking of today’s meal plan and have come up with the following. As i’m following the slimming world diet and eat healthily you can follow these recipes without gaining weight if it’s done correctly.
This morning we had the usual Overnight Oats
40g porridge oats
200g fat free natural yogurt
Mixed blueberries, strawberries and raspberries
- Layer the porridge, yogurt and fruit in a jar or bowl. Cover and put in the refrigerator overnight so the porridge absorbs all the yogurt.
- In the morning stir so all the layers are mixed together and top with more fruit.
Tip: Swap the berries for different Speed Free Foods – pear and blackberry, orange and peach, or apple and cinnamon.
Very easy to do when your eyes are half shut at midnight and very tasty in the morning. I’m thinking we will go with a hearty soup for mid day and pulled pork for dinner tonight as it’s my eldest son’s favorite and he and his family are coming for dinner tonight. Perhaps if i can bribe him with his favorite food he will do some work in the garden while i think of my next post 😉
I’m seriously starting with the whole social media and blog thing again as I think it will benefit , well hoping it will benefit, with photography sales and affiliation from the products I use. Deciding on how to do it as i’m totally out of my depth is another thing. I have watched webinars, they hook you with the ‘free’ webinar on how to make money from … then hit you for $497 reduced to $97 for the next 2 hours. COME ON, this is how they make their money.
It makes sense to syndicate your social media accounts, use Hootsuite or one of the others, set a page up in a file on your computer for blog posts as they come to you then put them on Hootsuite and post them religiously every day. It cant be THAT hard can it? I’m giving it a go hoping its as easy as other people make it look, wish me Luck!
I am always asked how did I come up with ‘spikey mouse photography‘ for my business, well it wasn’t really me. I have to admit that it is all thanks to a little boy called Ben who wanted to buy his mum a birthday present.
Ben is my eldest son and he was out with his grandmother one day and decided that he should buy me a present for my birthday, I think he was around 3 or 4 years old at the time. They finally came up with a ceramic ‘Hedgie’ hedgehog and Ben has been buying me 2 or 3 of them a year ever since. It is an understatement to say that I now have quite a collection and when I was naming my new business adventure everyone suggested using ‘Hedgehog’ but I wanted something a little different and found that in Bengali Hedgehog was spikey mouse and a business was born!
Strange how things happen, I have a great and memorable company name and am reminded of my little boy Ben every business day. Ben is now a grown man and a father himself and is really happy I chose to use him as my muse, thank you Ben. x
Several weeks ago i planned a visit to Dunham Massey to coincide with the autumn colours and the deer rut. The first day we had earmarked we couldn’t go, the day we did go we got to about a mile from our junction turn off and traffic came to a sudden stop due to a serious road traffic accident. It was a nice day and not to late on in the morning so we were not worried too much. Turns out there had been a guy knocked off his motor cycle so it was pretty bad. (but i didn’t let that stop me and i managed to get a few shots of the stalled traffic for potential stock photos.)
When we finally arrived at the park we arranged to go on a guided walk around the park in the hope of seeing the deer and learning some of the history of the place. Our guide John was fabulous, really knowledgeable and nice too. We walked with him for about an hour and didn’t see any deer at all! When we started to walk back through the park we did finally come across some young bucks and Doe’s hiding in the long grass. I managed to get a few photos without disturbing them, which can’t be said for this pair who got up right into the face of this buck. I had my camera ready just in case they were chased.
The day you are hit with a club of inspiration. Has anyone been there?
Yesterday was my day. With Digital Splash finally hitting Liverpool I was excited to go and see all of the stands, the camera (porn), the gizmos, bags and tripods, I was in my element. I had also booked a workshop which I hoped would be interesting and informative and I wasn’t disappointed. Catherine Connor: Master the Art of Selling your Photography The workshop was designed for those who want to discover how to retail more successfully, that’s me, seeking a brighter future, that’s me, learning the importance of the ” Why” your consumer buys from you, that’s me, developing a clearer understanding of how best to sell and promote your images, that’s me. Catherine fitted so much into her 60 minutes that i left totally buzzing and with good intentions spilling out of my ears, the difficulty will be in keeping them all.
Being bored and not able to go far from home, what a nightmare! I am constantly being told ‘enjoy it while you can, soon you will be back to normal, running around after everyone wishing you had more time for your self.’ True! Too true but it doesn’t help, at all. So what do you do? Spend money of course. I decided that if i can’t take photos outside away from home then i would make it possible to take photos at home. I bought a light box and a couple of lights and i am going to start a small project photographing fruit and veg among other things. I have a fancy for creating some photos with snails, i found a small snail climbing a flower stem and liked the look of it and wondered if i could reconstruct it. I also want to photograph thin sliced fruit in fizzy water, flowers against coloured backgrounds. There are numerous ways for me to use my new toys. All i have to do now is, well, do it!
I don’t know what to call this post as i haven’t written anything here for a while, it’s not that i haven’t been busy I’ve just been busy in a different way. I have had a difficult working year up until now, nothing seems to have gone right and at every turn i seem to have been hindered in one way or another and not able to make my art.
I have been battling with ill health for many years now, i have fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis among other things which have both got to a point where i have struggled with every day life. The arthritis in my hip had become so bad that just to walk i was taking morphine and paracetamol to get me through it. I have a great Doctor, she helps me so much and we both decided that we had to do something about the hip, she told me about the prerequisites for having the hip joint replaced and armed with multiple leaflets i went home to talk it through with my family. We would need to put a lot of thought into it as i am a carer for my mum who has cancer and i am the only driver in the house, the one who gets everyone everywhere on time. There is a lot resting on my shoulders that would have to be delegated carefully to others.
One thing on the list for the hip replacement was weight, body mass, i hold my hands up and can say that yes Chris and i have let things slip a bit, ill health and medication with side effects of weight gain weren’t helping me and i was told i needed to loose weight.
I guess in my heart i new that this year was going to be the year things had to change, i looked deep inside and new that i couldn’t go on with the way things were and made a pact with myself that i would do everything possible to fix my hip. I committed to loosing weight to take the strain off my joints and so far have lost over 2 stone and dragged Chris in with me which has been good for him too.
At the beginning of April i went in for surgery and had a total hip replacement. I was a model patient, did everything i was asked to the best of my abilities and pain threshold, which wasn’t easy i can tell you! Now at home i am forced to sit quietly with my feet up wearing the most ridiculous white pressure stockings, taking many short walks throughout the day. I am healing incredibly quickly and recovering well but oh am i bored!
November is the start of the truly busy time for craft fairs, artisan markets and most notably for myself, the Chester Arts Fair. This will be my third outing with a Deepbridge sponsored arts fair and hand on heart i have to say i just love them. You are guaranteed a very healthy footfall, fabulous art work from truly great artists who are all very friendly and you are guaranteed to find something to buy at reasonable prices. If you fancy visiting, Christmas gifts and all that, i have added a ticket to my Facebook page that you can download for free and this will give you free entrance in to the Arts Fair.
Over the years the Blue Bells on Grange Hill have multiplied exponentially. We now have a sea of flowers along the bottom of the hill which in the Spring is a beautiful sight. I dont know how they got there as there never were Blue Bells on the Hill when i was a child, not that i can remember anyway. Maybe someone has planted them hoping to make a beautiful sea of Blue, it certainly worked.
